Lake Ellis

Hidden Beauty of Mt. Kenya

Tucked away on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, Lake Ellis is a hidden gem that offers breathtaking views, serenity, and a touch of adventure. This alpine lake sits at an altitude of about 3,455 meters, surrounded by rolling moorlands, rugged peaks, and lush vegetation that adds to its unspoiled beauty. Unlike the more popular hiking routes on Mount Kenya, Lake Ellis remains relatively untouched, providing a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, hikers, and campers. The lake’s calm waters reflect the towering peaks above, creating a picture-perfect landscape that makes for an unforgettable experience. Whether you're looking to explore its scenic trails or simply relax by the shores, Lake Ellis is a must-visit destination for adventurers seeking tranquility in the wild.

Reaching Lake Ellis is an adventure in itself, offering a journey through some of Kenya’s most stunning landscapes. The lake is accessed through the Chogoria Route, one of the most scenic trails leading up Mount Kenya. From Nairobi, travelers can drive to Chogoria town, which is about 4-5 hours away. From there, a 4x4 vehicle is recommended to navigate the rugged dirt road leading to the trailhead at the Mount Kenya National Park gate. Hikers can then embark on a moderate trek through enchanting bamboo forests and vast moorlands before reaching the lake. The hike typically takes about 3-4 hours, making it a perfect day trip or an overnight camping spot for those looking to experience the magic of Mount Kenya under the stars.
